Special educational needs and disability
At Stephenson Way we recognise the diverse and individual needs of all of our pupils and we are dedicated to providing an education which enables them to fully access the curriculum and achieve their full potential.
We believe in positive intervention, removing barriers to learning, raising expectations and levels of achievement and working in partnership with other agencies in order to provide a positive educational experience for every child, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
The school has an experienced SEND team, including Mrs McSkelly, non-teaching SENCO (2 days per week) Mrs Connor (School-based SENCO) and Mrs Layfield-Carroll (SENCO assistant). We also have a full-time Pastoral Support Lead (Mrs Hill) as well as a three Mental Health lead staff (Mrs Layfield-Carroll, Miss Widdowson and Miss Grant)
We also have a Designated Teacher for Children Looked After (Mr Jones) who works closely with staff to ensure all teachers in school understand the implications for those children who are looked after and have special educational needs
If you would like to discuss your SEND requirements in detail, please contact the school to arrange an appointment. If you are unhappy with any support you have been given, please contact the school and ask to speak to Mrs McSkelly our SENDCO, or click here for our complaints policy.

SEND INFORMATION REPORT
Our SEND Information Report – which is part of Durham County Council’s Local Offer – provides details about how we support children and young people with Special Educational Needs in our school.
The SEND Information Report is reviewed annually. At Stephenson Way Academy and Nursery School, we are committed to the equal inclusion of all pupils in all areas of school life. We recognise the diverse and individual needs of all of our pupils and take into account the additional support required by those children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
This SEND Information Report should be read alongside the school’s SEND Policy, the Equalities Information and Objectives and the Accessibility Plan.
SEND Admissions
For information on the admission of pupils with a disability, please view our Accessibility Plan. Children and young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan follow a different admission and transfer process for a new school. Please continue to complete Durham County Council’s parental preference form, as part of the admission process to a new school. You continue to have a right to request a particular school and this will be considered alongside the information that we have about your child’s special educational needs. The information would have been provided as part of the Education, Health and Care assessment or following the review meeting.
For Children and young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan the SEND team can be contacted on 03000 265878.
The School Places and Admissions Team can be contacted on 03000 265 896 or by clicking on this link to the Durham County Council School Places and Admissions Team website.
