Our governing body plays a vital role in helping our school provide the very best education for every child. Working closely with the headteacher and senior leaders, governors offer guidance, oversight and support to ensure the school is well led, safe and successful.
What the governing body does
The governing body has a number of important statutory duties. These are the responsibilities required by law and include:
- helping to set the school’s strategic direction, vision and ethos
- holding leaders to account for educational standards and the wellbeing of pupils
- overseeing the school’s budget and making sure public money is used wisely
- ensuring the school meets safeguarding, health and safety, and equality duties
- monitoring the quality of teaching, pupil progress and school performance
- approving key policies and reviewing how effectively they are put into practice
- making sure the school complies with legal and regulatory requirements
Our governors do not manage the school on a day-to-day basis. That is the role of the headteacher and staff team. Instead, our governors take a wider view, asking questions, reviewing information and helping to shape the long-term success of the school.
Support and challenge
The governing body supports the school by listening carefully, encouraging good practice and recognising achievements. Our governors bring a range of skills, experience and perspectives, which help school to improve and grow.
The governors provide constructive challenge. This means asking thoughtful questions, checking whether plans are working and making sure decisions are based on the best interests of pupils. Challenge is always respectful and purposeful, helping leaders to reflect, improve and stay focused on outcomes for children. Governors help to create a culture of high expectations, accountability and continuous improvement for the school.
