Safeguarding
6. Early Help and External Support
At SWANS, we believe that safeguarding works best when schools, families, and external services work together. We actively engage with early help and safeguarding services across County Durham to ensure children and families receive the right support at the right time.
Early Help Support
We recognise that some concerns can be addressed most effectively through early help. Early help focuses on providing support as soon as difficulties arise to prevent issues from escalating.
School staff may work with families to:
- Identify concerns early
- Complete early help assessments where appropriate
- Coordinate support with other professionals
County Durham Safeguarding Services
Where concerns meet safeguarding thresholds, we follow County Durham Safeguarding Children Partnership (CDSCP) procedures and guidance.
Concerns may be shared with:
- County Durham First Contact Service
(The single point of contact for safeguarding and child protection concerns)
This ensures concerns are assessed promptly and appropriate action is taken to keep children safe.
Working with External Agencies
We work closely with a range of external professionals, including:
- Social Care
- Health services
- Early Help teams
- Educational Psychology
- SEND and specialist support services
- Police and safeguarding partners
Information is shared appropriately and in line with statutory guidance to ensure children are protected.
Support for Families
We signpost families to trusted local and national services for additional help, including:
- Parenting support
- Mental health and wellbeing services
- Domestic abuse support
- Online safety guidance
Our Commitment
All safeguarding concerns are managed in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and County Durham safeguarding procedures. We act in the best interests of the child and work collaboratively to ensure timely, effective support.
