Safeguarding
5. Safeguarding for SEND and Vulnerable Pupils
At SWANS we recognise that some children may be more vulnerable to safeguarding risks. We are committed to providing additional care, protection, and support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and other vulnerable pupils.
Understanding Vulnerability
We understand that vulnerability may be linked to:
- Special educational needs or disabilities
- Communication or language needs
- Social, emotional or mental health needs
- Family circumstances or changes
- Previous adverse experiences
Staff are trained to recognise how safeguarding concerns may present differently for vulnerable children.
Tailored Safeguarding Support
We ensure safeguarding arrangements are adapted to meet individual needs by:
- Using child-friendly and accessible communication approaches
- Providing trusted adults and key workers
- Offering additional check-ins and emotional support
- Making reasonable adjustments to routines and environments
- Ensuring children understand how to ask for help
Working in Partnership
We work closely with:
- Parents and carers
- SENDCo and pastoral teams
- External professionals and support services
This ensures that safeguarding concerns are identified early and support is put in place quickly.
Listening to the Child
The voice of the child is central to our safeguarding practice. We take time to:
- Build strong, trusting relationships
- Ensure children feel safe to share worries
- Adapt communication methods to suit individual needs
By providing targeted, inclusive safeguarding support, SWANS ensures that all pupils are safe, supported, and able to thrive.
